STRONG SALES RESUME IN SEPTEMBER 2016

In a strong turnaround from the previous month, there was a 12.1 percent surge in home sales in August, according to the Maryland Association of REALTORS®, (MAR).  While there were declines in smaller rural markets, overall most counties had strong sales activity. Leading the pack was Frederick County with a 28.3 percent increase, followed by Charles County at 27.6 percent and Calvert County at 25 percent. Average price rose by 2.5 percent and median price climbed by 4.1 percent as compared to the same time period in 2015.

“We are pleasantly surprised by the boost in homes sales in August,” said MAR President Bonnie Casper. Casper added, “Homebuyers were very engaged in the market despite the fact that we are still in the summer months. This level of sales activity and pending units in what is traditionally a slow month for real estate signals a robust autumn market.”

Maryland monthly housing statistics are compiled by data as reported by MRIS and the Coastal Association of REALTORS®. For the purposes of this report, “units” are defined as the closed sales and “pending units” are properties under contract. Months of inventory are based on the current active inventory and monthly sales for the corresponding month.
*MAR publishes the Maryland Housing Statistics monthly; it is available through the Association’s website, www.mdrealtor.org.
