More than 2,300 biotech/life sciences businesses call Maryland home, employing more than 128,000 Marylanders.

Cybersecurity, IT, and AI

With the presence of the federal government and military in Maryland, the state stands as one of the leaders in cybersecurity, IT, and AI. Maryland’s University system is leading the way in AI 
research and development. 

Foreign Investment

Located roughly halfway between Boston and Atlanta, London and Los Angeles, Maryland’s location offers proximity and access to key U.S. and international decision makers, partners, and agencies in the technology, biosciences, finance, and manufacturing. In 2016, foreign-controlled companies employed 118,300 Maryland workers, or 5.5% of the state’s total private sector employment. The Netherlands, U.K., Canada, and France are major sources of foreign investment in Maryland.

Exports

More than 6,200 Maryland companies exported goods outside of the U.S., with small and medium-sized firms generating 31% of this output. Maryland has 19 foreign offices with representatives to help Maryland companies expand into overseas markets.

By Air

The BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport is strategically located to both Baltimore and Washington, DC. Nearby is the Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia and Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC.

By Sea

 The Port of Baltimore is the nation’s largest port facility for specialized cargo and passenger facilities. The Port provides the closest access to the Midwest, capitalizing on its location. Three of the world’s largest shipping companies operate out of the Port, as well as cruise lines.

By Land

Freight and passenger rail connect Metropolitan Maryland to all points in the U.S. Federal highways connect warehouses and trucking companies in all directions to consumers nationwide.

Maryland REALTORS®’ Global Business Committee seeks to promote opportunities for members and consumers. Whether it is an international clientele seeking to move people or businesses to Maryland, or Marylanders looking to buy property overseas, the members of the Global Business Community provide programming and educational opportunities, such as the Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) designation, which provides the tools and framework for working internationally.

What Is a CIPS Designation, and Who Is It For?

 The Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) designation is for REALTORS® from the United States and abroad, as well as association staff and volunteer leaders who wish to develop or grow their international real estate business.
